关键词之一： 主动学Vs被动学
学英语和交朋友一样，关键在于主动。大学英语学习与中学英语学习的主要区别在于学时的缩短。
中学时期学习英语，每天都有一堂课，我们“被迫”每天与英语亲密接触，虽属无奈，但关系熟稔。且中学课文内容单纯，以掌握语法为重点，通常篇幅短小精悍，三言两语，很好理解。
如今大学里两三天才会“被迫”见一次伊人面，外在压力也远不如从前，每个unit都有专题，或咏物，或言情，或环境保护，或转基因话题，文章包罗万象，气象万千，文笔各异，较之从前均属累牍之作。于是，满目生单词，到处难句子，英雄气短，怯意渐生，只好望“英”兴叹。
思维误区：
大学英语课文的意义并不仅仅在于认识几个新单词，掌握几个固定用法。老师通常会从整体出发，引导我们认识课文的行文结构，中心思想，文体风格，对新单词和固定用法的个别讲解只是为了大家更好地认识课文。中学英语课上那种事无巨细、精雕细琢单词语法的日子已经一去不复返了!
解决方案：
痛下决心，改变态度，认清情况，主动出击。以课文内容为例：
上课前几天开始预习课文，通读若干遍，直到基本了解文章大意为止。随时标出新单词，或存疑句群。
下一步，找一本可靠的英汉双解词典，仔细查阅生词和短语，做笔记。我上大学时，老师建议我们用《朗文当代高级英语辞典》(英英·英汉双解)，因为它释义简明易懂，例句很生动。查阅时注意尽量先看词典对该词的英文解释，再看例句，遇到动词或动词短语尤其要注意。笔记不仅包括释义，例句和搭配也很重要。这一步耗时越长，效果越显著。考虑到精力问题，可分几天完成。
第三步，上课紧跟老师，及时补充笔记，学习中心思想，了解行文结构，欣赏文体风格。接下来，再朗读文章若干遍，然后整理笔记，主动记忆典型例句。再进行拓展性学习，可上网搜索相关主题的英语文章，广泛阅读。主题相关，则单词多相近，重复几率高，多读几遍，既长见识，又熟单词，更增信心。如感兴趣，还可自行编辑专题，效果亦佳。
关键词之二： 灵活学VS局限学
中学只要盯紧英语书，稍稍练练听力，通过考试便万事大吉。大学则要求大家各展所能，学以致用，听说读写样样兼顾，开辟英语学习的另一片天地。
思维误区：
大学英语学习是不是仅限于课本? 答案无疑是否定的。但需要指出，以课本为基础学习是应付考试的直接有效途径。本末倒置则大违学习之道。
解决方案：
听说读写，相辅相成，灵活变通，寓学于乐。以听为例，听力教程为本，需要精听，即听到完全理解无障碍为止，听五十遍也在所不惜。除此之外，英文歌曲(如Backstreet Boy，Michael Learns to Rock等)歌词简练，多俗语、习惯用语，即使不唱，听听也是好的。英文影视剧，选对白晓畅的观看(英语原声，英文字幕)，避免俚语粗口过多、语速过快的，同时还能了解异域风俗习惯。电视短剧可反复多听，练习听力的同时掌握语音语调，一举数得。
再以说为例。说的方式有很多，并不仅限于英语角对话。自言自语、鹦鹉学舌、公众演讲、高声朗诵、角色扮演等等不一而足，完全可以根据具体情况灵活掌握。
关键词之三： 坚持学VS断续学
思维误区：
只有传统意义上的学习才是学习? 错! 这里的坚持学，并不是每天一定要背多少单词，记几个句子，而是坚持与英语的接触，不要形成真空或者断档。
解决方案：
确保每天一定时间(如半小时)跟英语亲密接触。或看，或读，或听，或写，或歌……使英语真正成为你日常生活的一部分。如此坚持下去，相信你的英语水平一定可以取得长足的进步。

The Board Meeting had come to an end. Bob started to stand up and jostled the table, spilling his coffee over his notes. "

Everyone had a good laugh, and soon we were all telling stories of our most embarrassing moments. It came around to Frank who sat quietly listening to the others. Someone said, "Come on, Frank. Tell us your most embarrassing moment."


Frank laughed and began to tell us of his childhood. "I grew up in San Pedro. My Dad was a fisherman, and he loved the sea. He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the sea.He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed the family. Not just enough for our family, but also for his Mom and Dad and the other kids that were still at home."


He looked at us and said, "I wish you could have met my Dad. He was a big man, and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the seas for his catch. When you got close to him, he smelled like the ocean. He would wear his old canvas, foul-weather coat and his bibbed overalls. His rain hat would be pulled down over his brow. No matter how much my Mother washed them, they would still smell of the sea and of fish."

Frank's voice dropped a bit. "When the weather was bad he would drive me to school. He had this old truck that he used in his fishing business. That truck was older than he was. It would wheeze and rattle down the road. You could hear it coming for blocks. As he would drive toward the school,I would shrink down into the seat hoping to disappear. Half the time, he would slam to a stop and the old truck would belch a cloud of smoke. He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was so embarrassing for me. Here, I was 12 years old, and my Dad would lean over and kiss me goodbye!"


He paused and then went on, "I remember the day I decided I was too old for a goodbye kiss. When we got to the school and came to a stop, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean toward me, but I put my hand up and said, 'No, Dad.'


It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way, and he had this surprised look on his face.


I said, 'Dad, I'm too old for a goodbye kiss. I'm too old for any kind of kiss.'


My Dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear up. I had never seen him cry. He turned and looked out the windshield. 'You're right,' he said. 'You are a big boy…a man. I won't kiss you anymore.'"


Frank got a funny look on his face, and the tears began to well up in his eyes, as he spoke. "It wasn't long after that when my Dad went to sea and never came back. It was a day when most of the fleet stayed in, but not Dad. He had a big family to feed. They found his boat adrift with its nets half in and half out. He must have gotten into a gale and was trying to save the nets and the floats."


I looked at Frank and saw that tears were running down his cheeks. Frank spoke again. A man left for a vacation to Jamaica. His wife was on a business trip and was planning to meet him there the next day. When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick e-mail message. Unable to find the scrap of paper on which he had written her e-mail address, he did his best to type it in from memory. Unfortunately, he missed one letter, and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher's wife whose husband had passed away only the day before. When the grieving widow checked her e-mail, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor dead. At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen: "Dearest Wife, Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Your Loving Husband. P.S. Sure is hot down here."

]]> http://622005110.qzone.qq.com/blog/1236767981#comment 134218240 Wed, 11 Mar 2009 10:39:41 GMT http://622005110.qzone.qq.com/blog/1236767981 http://622005110.qzone.qq.com/blog/1228188227 学习英语必须理解英语词汇的原创意义，原创意义是英语词汇众多词义和词性的核心部分；也只有理解了词汇的原创意义，词语的记忆和运用才有效果和作用。比如： ①aboard:前缀“a”表示“to”，词中“board”表示“板子”，因此，“aboard”这个单词的“原创意义”就是“到板子上”，那么为什么“aboard”具有“上船(飞机、车)”等的含义呢？要回答这个问题，大家必须对下面一段关于人类的历史有所了解：在人类诞生之初，人类面临最大的自然灾害就是洪水，在神话与历史记载中，中国有“女娲补天”和“大禹治水”的故事，西方国家有“诺亚方舟”的传说，那个时候，人类并没有真正意义的船，只有木头或者板子，经过多次的洪水之后，动物先天所具有的本能促使人类的祖先“爬到木头上或者板子上”，以逃避洪水的灾难，因而，“aboard”实际上就是描述人类“到木头上或者板子上去”的这个动作。另外，“板子（board）”实际上是“船boat”的前身，英语单词“oar桨”也是来源于board，因为，人类不可能永远在板子上随洪水四处漂流，人类要控制“板子”的运动，就要不停地用手划水，之后出现了代替手的工具“桨”，中国字的“板子和桨”都跟“木”字有关，也是来源于同样的故事。只是，英语取意“人和桨在板子的中间”，因此，去掉“board”的两头字母“b”和“d”就形成了现在的“oar桨”。最后，因为“板子（board）”是人类最早的交通工具，所以，现在的一切交通工具都可以与“板子（board）”发生关系，比如，“Welcome aboard!”，大家千万不要根据字典理解成“欢迎上船”，一定要根据说话人的特定背景来确定这句话的真实含义：如果说话人是站在船上，那当然是欢迎大家到“船上”去；如果说话人是在飞机上，这句话的意思就是“欢迎登机”，等等。
②abandon和husband:在解释abandon之前，大家先看一下husband, 这个单词是由两字词中组成：husband=house+band。“hus”是“house”的缩略形式（缩略法详见第七天第二节），“band”就是用来束缚的条带，因此，这个单词的“原创意义”就是“盖房子”的意思，大家还记得“三顾茅庐”和杜甫“卷我屋上三重茅”的诗句，husband这个单词最早就应该出现在这个时候，即这时的房子就是把茅草用“条带”“束缚”起来；而在一个“婚姻家庭”中，负责“盖房子”的一方就是“husband”，这一传统在中国广大的农村依然流行。“牛郎织女”的故事生动地反映来农业化社会中的男女分工，husband作的工作叫作“husbandry（农牧业）”，包括纯粹的农业“agriculture”；女性负责纺织和养育子女，在“spin纺纱”、“spinster老处女”和“matrimony婚姻”等单词中得以体现，在此不多讲，重点提一下“妻子”的英文单词wife就是来自于纺织者weaver（其中涉及到缩略法、元音字母互换和辅音字母互换，详见教材。）。

王博，关于金融问题，除了课堂上说的那些英语词汇之外，我再也没有任何见解。关于“中国和平崛起”问题，我至今并没有认为汉语的“中国和平崛起”有任何的问题，我也不知道为什么要改成“和平发展”（当然，上个世纪八十年代，邓小平先生就指出“和平与发展”是二十世纪世界的两大主题，这与当今的“和平发展”有承接关系，但在世界背景和针对性方面不同于二十一世纪的“和平崛起”理论）。我当初只是认为，把“中国和平崛起”翻译成“China’s Rise”是与这个理论的内容和出台背景相矛盾的，我们不能够仅仅根据英汉辞典或者国外的翻译就盲目作出结论，而应该结合国内外的政治、经济和理论现实翻译这样的内容。因此，“China’s Developing”的译法比较好，既能够反映我们创造“中国和平崛起”理论的初衷，也能够反映出中国发展的实际情况，让中国周边国家清楚“发展中国家developing country”的中国不会对世界构成“China's Threat”。至于把汉语也改成“和平发展”，我个人认为，这种表达在语气上就失去了鼓舞中国人民奋发图强实现民族伟大复兴的那种气概。我当初确实与有关老师讨论过这个翻译问题，但那已经是几年前的事情了。我找出当初的稿子，稍作改动，附在下面，供您参考：
第一：China’s Rise，确实能够反映“崛起”，但是，却不代表“和平”。“和平崛起”在中国的辩证法中可以讲得通，但是，在以竞争为市场经济基本原则的西方国家，一方的发展，特别是崛起，本身就是对另一方的威胁。比如，与希腊衰亡相对应的罗马的崛起，可以翻译成“Rome’s Rise”；二战之后，美国有一本研究西特勒帝国的畅销书叫作《第三帝国的崛起和衰亡》，其英文名称即为“The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich”；苏联解体之后，美国学者又发表了一系列篇文章，比如《苏联的崩溃，中国的崛起》，其英文名即为“Russia's Fall and China's Rise”或者“the Fall of Former Soviet Union, the Rise of China”等等。我们必须考虑rise一词在西方国家政治生活中的含义，而不仅仅是根据英汉词典或者美国人的翻译就将“中国和平崛起”简单地翻译成“China’s Rise”。布什政府将中国定位为“竞争性competitive”关系，而不是克林顿时期的“建设性constructive”关系，就是这个词的最好例证。从美国的全球性政策来看，美国的唯一目的就是防止任何一个地区出现任何一个独立崛起的国家，从而挑战美国的地区利益。二十世纪九十年代之后，美国在全球范围内遏制的唯一目标就是中国的“崛起”，中国周边国家出现的“中国威胁论China’s Threat”的发源地就是美国。China’s Rise，本身就等同于China’s Threat，并且，China’s Rise也不是中国人首次使用，而是以美国学者为首的支持“中国威胁论”的学者所使用的另一个稍微“中性”但决不是“中性”的词语。由于时间关系，我无法查到第一个使用China’s Rise的人，但是，在互联网上关于China’s Rise的讨论普遍具有“中国威胁”的内容。其实，作为目前世界上唯一的超级大国，美国的这种心态很容易理解，我们中国人不也是经常说“一山难容二虎”，“一天无二日”吗？关键的是，我们中国不想作嗜血成性的“虎”，而愿作“普照大地促生万物”的“日”，这就是“和平崛起”。
第二：中国提出“和平崛起”理论有对内和对外双重目的，对内是次要的，主要体现在鼓舞中国人的士气，激励中国人继续努力奋斗。但是，提出“和平崛起”理论的主要目的是对外的，就是要消除国际上对中国经济、军事等快速发展而引起的担心和恐惧，消除“中国威胁论”给中国发展制造的外交障碍，为中国的发展或者崛起创造一个有利的国际环境。因此，“和平崛起”的对内职责主要强调的“崛起”，而对外职责强调的是“和平”，在翻译成英文的时候一定要突出“和平”两字。在理解辩证法的中国学者看来，“和平”与”崛起”是不存在矛盾的，但是在奉行马尔萨斯人口论和社会达尔文主义的西方主流社会中，“崛起”就等同于“威胁”，他们的逻辑就是“一山难容二虎”，“一天无二日”，他们就是要争夺世界霸权，两次惨绝人寰的世界大战都是由他们引起并参入其中的。综上所述，我个人建议把“和平崛起”翻译成“China’s Peaceful Developing”，简称“China’s Developing”。
第三：“China’s Developing”既强调了“和平”，又反映了中国发展的实际情况。China’s Rise与China’s Threat一样，都夸大和超越了中国发展的实际水平，中国的人均GDP水平甚至排在许多第三世界国家之后，因此，rise并不符合中国在世界经济发展中的实际水平。而Developing则符合中国的“发展中国家Developing Country”的地位，并且符合我国的长期目标。比如，邓小平先生曾清楚地指出：到二十一世纪中叶，我国的目标是赶上二十世纪末期中等发达国家的水平。并且，我国在加入WTO的过程中也是以“发展中国家”的身份加入的。为了获得“发展中国家”的身份加入WTO，中国政府官员和广大学者都付出了相当大的努力，因此，Developing的身份不能轻易放弃，否则，中国的经济损失则会更大。中国整体经济的发展和综合国力的快速提高，最多可以在详细论述的时候，加上rapid一词，比如，China’s rapid peaceful developing”，或者，the rapid peaceful developing of China。
第四：中国的学者应该明确反对China’s Rise的英文翻译，not rise, but developing。中国目前的人均GDP还很低，如果普遍跟随西方某些国家使用rise一词，必定从文字而不是事实上扩大中国的经济实力，因而就要在联合国会费、汇率、外援、救灾以及其他国际经济事务中承担超出我国实际能力的责任，而我国涉及国计民生的众多经济建设也同样急需资金投入和国际援助。另外，其他的翻译，比如，China’s Peaceful Development，则反映不出中国“正在发展或者正在崛起”的情况，也反映不出中国的“发展中国家”的实际情况，而China’s Peaceful Developing中的developing则具有“正在发展和正在崛起”以及“发展中国家”的双重的含义。个人建议，仅供参考。刘仁 ]]> http://622005110.qzone.qq.com/blog/1225258149#comment 134218240 Wed, 29 Oct 2008 05:29:09 GMT http://622005110.qzone.qq.com/blog/1225258149
